The Safe and Quality Use of Medicines SQM group is a joint DHB CEOs' working group coordinated through DHBNZ. It's prime focus has been to promote safe and quality use of medicines in all DHB hospitals. 'Alerts' for high risk medicines are prepared by the group and circulated to all DHBs. Tool kits, including guidelines on medicines use, pharmaceutical management and medicines safety strategies are also being developed for implementation at the DHB level. A major initiative has been the launch of the Safe and Quality Use of Medicines New Zealand Strategy by the Minister of Health in 2005 with the aim - "to achieve safer, more effective and more appropriate use of medicines so that health outcomes from the use of medicines are improved for the community as a whole". The strategy has eight goals and the keyaction points developed to achieve these goals are critical SQM activities, which include major initiatives such as medicines reconciliation, and IT models to minimise bedside medication errors. The high level MOH consulatation document 'Towards a NZ Medicines Strategy', needs to be seen in the more immediate and operational context of the SQM Strategy. This address will also review the political and operational contexts which underpin the challenge for practicable medicines management in NZ in the future.
