This session will present a position that is based on the premise that
Maori were traditional smokefree prior to the arrival of early Western
explorers and settlers.
Tobacco is now imbedded into Maori culture and is seen as a
'normalised' activity. The challenge is to denormalise this addictive
practice and aspire towards a traditional smokefree world. The
journey to reach this point will require a mix of both non-Maori and
Maori tobacco control strategies that will address the 'loss' felt
throughout Maoridom.
I have been in this position for 6 and a half challenging years. The
primary role for the Maori Smokefree Coalition is to advocate change at
a political and policy level on tobacco control issues from a Maori
position.
Ultimately “Te Ao Maori Te Ao Auahi Kore” is what drives the passion
that I have for this job and our people. Removing smoking (the leading
preventable cause of premature death) from the lives of Maori will
greatly improve the overall health of Maori..
