BPAC through the ages

How the responsible use of pharmaceuticals by general practitioners and other health professional groups throughout New Zealand has changed over time.

biography

Professor Tilyard graduated in 1980 and entered into General Practice in 1985.  He became a member of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners in 1990.  He gained his Doctorate in Medicine Degree in 1995 and was made a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners in 1996.  He is currently the Elaine Gurr Professor of General Practice, at the Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago. 

His research interests are in general practice, health services utilisation, medical informatics, osteoporosis and obstetric care.  He has published 92 papers in refereed journals. 

He is Executive Director of South Link Health an incorporated society whose coverage area is South Island wide.  South Link Health has a membership base of 508 general practitioners, 372 practice nurses and 188 practice managers.  South Link Health’s mission is “promoting primary care through leadership, innovation and education”.

He is also CEO of bpacnz  an independent organisation whose role is to promote the responsible use of pharmaceuticals to general practitioners and other health professional groups throughout New Zealand. 

In addition, Professor Tilyard works in his own private practice and is on the Otago Hospice Community Board.
