He Rongoa Pai, He Oranga Whanau

biography

Maryann has iwi affiliations to Tuhoe, Ngāti Awa and Te Aitangā a Hauiti. Her current role is Māori Health Analyst for the New Zealand government drug-funding agency PHARMAC. The role was developed to improve capacity to assess and implement the goals of PHARMAC’s Maori Responsiveness Strategy (MRS), 2002. This work has involved a review of the MRS in 2006 to identify PHARMAC’s strengths and weaknesses in implementation of the strategy and development of a 5 year work plan to continue to improve prescribing and uptake for Maori on subsidised medicines.

Maryann’s work experience includes health research, project management, health service funding and health quality auditing both in New Zealand and in the UK. Prior to PHARMAC, Maryann was with Canterbury District Health Board as a Maori Health Analyst. This work involved local consultation with iwi and Maori in Canterbury to develop regional Maori health plans, lead regional Maori service development initiatives and report on national health indicators.

Maryann currently project manages the He Rongoa Pai, He Oranga Whanau – Maori Families staying well with medicines campaign that aims to increase medicine management knowledge for the Maori primary care workforce about safe and optimal use of prescribed medicines.
