Best intentions and a good cause don’t always ensure a great result –
sometimes we get it wrong, sometimes there are unintended
consequences. A brief look at a few ‘learning experiences’ in
health promotion.
Iain Potter is the Chief Executive of the Health Sponsorship Council
(HSC), a Crown Entity in Wellington. The HSC is involved in
promoting healthy lifestyles to New Zealanders through programmes such
as Smokefree/Auahi Kore, SunSmart and Bike Wise. It is also
currently involved in developing a national social marketing approach
for preventing and minimising gambling related harm and is working with
the Ministry of Health on aspects of the HEHA strategy and
implementation plan. Iain has been with the HSC since 1992, was a
member of the Participation Taskforce, the HEHA external advisory
group, the Cancer Control Taskforce and is a past executive council
member of the Public Health Association.
