National Pharmacist Services Framework

This Framework, developed the past eighteen months, involving comprehensive consultation across the health sector, describes existing dispensing services and the five newly developed pharmacist services.

The new services are divided into two main themes:
Information services - comprised of: Health Education (ED) to patients; and Medicines and Clinical Information Support (MCIS) to Prescribers.
Medicines Review Services - Medicines Use Review and Adherence Support (MUR), a four part review assessing the patient’s use, understanding and adherence to their medication regimen.
Medicines Therapy Assessment (MTA) -  a comprehensive clinical review of an individual patient’s medication as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Comprehensive Medicines Management (CMM), case based active management of changes and (future) pharmacist prescribing activities, as part of a multidisciplinary team.

These new services aim to:
Enable flexible implementation; promote optimal medicine related outcomes from medicines; encourage multidisciplinary work practices, as well as primary-primary and primary-secondary integration.

This session will focus on how this framework will make a difference to the individual patient, to prescribers, to Primary Health Care Organisations, and to District Health Boards.
