Smoking and the political agenda

Smoking was not on the political agenda in the early 1980s. People could smoke on trains, buses, planes, in shops and in the workplace. When ASH was established and a full time Director appointed, this all changed. ASH's high profile campaigning and lobbying activities during the 1980's led to the Smokefree Environments Act 1990 which mandated a smoking policy for every workplace and banned most forms of tobacco advertising.
