Smoking was not on the political agenda in the early 1980s. People
could smoke on trains, buses, planes, in shops and in the workplace.
When ASH was established and a full time Director appointed, this all
changed. ASH's high profile campaigning and lobbying activities during
the 1980's led to the Smokefree Environments Act 1990 which mandated a
smoking policy for every workplace and banned most forms of tobacco
advertising.
Deirdre Kent was the Director of ASH (Action on Smoking and Health)
from 1983-1992. She has been a maths teacher, an environmental and
social activist and a Tauranga City Councillor. She has taught
campaigning skills and is the author of The Joy of Lobbying, Lobbying
Your Local Council, and, more recently Healthy Money Healthy Planet –
Developing Sustainability through new Money Systems.
