Dee Mangin and Les Toop will summarise the current situation. They will suggest ways forward. A much more politically active stance by those passively supporting a ban is required. Political parties with policies which place profit before health must undertake a closer examination of the evidence of harms caused by DTCA and reflect on the strength and breadth of informed public and professional opinion.
Dr Dee Mangin is a senior lecturer and director of the Primary Care Research Group in the Department of General Practice at the Christchurch School of Medicine. She has been involved in teaching and research to underpin rational prescribing for many years. Since 2002 she has been actively involved in advocating for a ban of DTCA and for its replacement with independent consumer health information.
