The General Practitioner’s role

Each morning we don our invisible capes and strap on our customised superhero utility belts.  We go out into our communities with the greatest intentions to treat the sick, save the dying and educate our fellow citizens about the foul play of villain bacteria, viruses & diseases.

But is everyone getting a piece of the action? 

Puzzlingly, the answer is no. Although the evidence in New Zealand is overwhelming that Maori have a greater health need, Maori receive less care and lesser quality of care. Surely we all find this puzzling. Similarly, even though we all know that there are increased communication difficulties and cultural differences when serving Maori patients, Maori receive less time and less effort. Dr David Jansen
MB.ChB, MRNZCGP, BHB, BA (Māori), Dip Tchg

David is Ngāti Raukawa and was formerly a resource teacher of Māori studies and language in the Hawkes Bay before he completed his training as a medical practitioner at Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland.

David’s main focus is running clinical teaching, Te Reo and Tikanga Māori programmes for Māori health professionals throughout the country. He is also Chairman of Te Ataarangi Educational Trust. David has also published a phrase book of Māori medical terms which wasl be released in February 2006 as a resource for the Māori health sector.

He is currently a General Practitioner in Auckland, and Lecturer at the University of Auckland School of Medicine and Health Sciences. David is also a member of Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners
